Tilapia in Peru: In five years úlimos exports quadrupled

* More than half of Tilapia species are grown in Piura.
* China is the largest producer of tilapia in the world.
* In 2012 2500 tons of tilapia were harvested.

At first, back in the seventies, tilapia was brought from Africa mainly as fodder for the big fish of the Amazon: the paiches.

Although since 2004 a real culture of tilapia in Peru for marketing starts, this production has not been without its ups and downs. However, it is since 2008 that the production and export records steady growth that accompanies today. From January to August this year Tilapia exports amounted to $ 1.05 million, representing an increase of 11.6% over the same period last year. In the last five years, exports of Tilapia quadrupled.

The main target market is the United States where it goes 99% of tilapia exported. This shows that there is much room for diversifying the destination countries. UK and the Netherlands are major buyers of Tilapia, however, now buy from countries like China and Taiwan. In the region, Mexico is also a major buyer of Chinese tilapia.
