CHILE: Fishing Downloads increase almost 30% in the first seven months

Fish landings accumulated July 2014 totaled 2.2 million tons, 29.8% more than in the first seven months of 2013, when 1.7 million tonnes were landed.
According to the latest Report of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), the fishing sector contributed 1.6 million tonnes between January and July 2014.
With a total of 1.3 million tonnes (54.6% on the same period in 2013), small pelagics accounted for 84.7% of the landings in the fishing sector. The main species were common sardine, anchovy and mackerel, with shares of 32.6%, 38.5% and 18.3% of the cumulative discharges pelagic fisheries.
These landings were concentrated in the V and X (61.4% of total) regions; XV and II (34.2%); and III and IV (4.4%).
As catches of demersal fisheries, as of July 2014 had landed 7,660 tonnes of southern hake, 23.2% fewer than in the same period of 2013 (9,980 tonnes).
The main contribution came from the artisanal fleet, with 4,100 tonnes, while industrial vessels landed 3,500 tonnes.
Subpesca also reported that the landing of hake accumulated July this year totaled 12,800 tons, 41.8% less than in 2013 (22,000 tonnes).
Landings of Patagonian toothfish (toothfish) was 1,310 tonnes as of July 2014, 20.1% fewer than in the first seven months of 2013 (1,640 tonnes).
Between January and July last 548 tonnes of golden eel is landed, compared to 895 tonnes in the same period last year (38.8% less).
Meanwhile, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) reported that aquaculture harvests totaled in the first seven months of this year 675,540 tons, representing a rise of 3.3% compared to the same period in 2013 when 653,850 tons were harvested.
Major resources produced nationally were Atlantic salmon, mussels (mussel) and rainbow trout, which accounted for 51.2%, 29.2% and 1.5% of the total harvest. Regions X and XI generated most of the harvest: a total of 399,000 tonnes and 248,300 tonnes respectively.
The Atlantic salmon harvests totaled 345,960 tons, 25.7% more than the cumulative volume between January and July 2013 (275,200 tonnes). Most of the production was from the Regions XI (208,700 tonnes) and X (114,400 tons).
Mussel harvests accumulated through July totaled 197,380 tonnes, up 9.7% on the same period in 2013 (218,470 tonnes). 100% of the harvest came from the X region.
Meanwhile, steelhead harvests totaled 77,970 tons as of July 2014, 8.1% less than the amount accumulated in the same period in 2013 (84,800 tonnes). Most of the production came from Regions X (48,700 tonnes) and XI (27,600 tonnes).
