Preventive Vedas avoided capture 25,000 tons of juvenile anchovy

During the first season of 2014 fishing catch 25,000 tonnes of juvenile anchovy, due to the new system of preventive and selective closures are avoided, said today the Ministry of Production (Produce).

These actions, called preventive suspension, developed in coordination with the Instituto del Mar del Peru (Imarpe) and the private sector, thus contributing to the care of the biomass of the main fishing resource of Peru.

The Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Juan Carlos Requejo, stressed that the actions allowed the stock of the resource gain weight for the following fishing season.

“So, we will have 90,000 additional tons of adult anchovy which may be captured by the boats”He noted.

He argued that these results occurred after last year, a regulation whereby a ten percent tolerance was granted to vessels if they reported the existence of juvenile anchovy at the time of their capture was established.

“These measures, together with the established procedure, have managed to discourage discards at sea, allowing a significant decrease in unreported fishing of this appeal”He said.

He said that the incentive worked and the reports allowed them to temporarily close 25 fishing zones within 24 hours of discharge produced by making respect the areas where there was a high presence of juveniles.

The official revealed that the care of juvenile Fishing has been praised not only in Peru but also abroad.

Indeed, reported that from 5 to 7 November will be held in Peru the International Meeting on Oversight and Fisheries and Aquaculture Control event, which will be attended by the heads of the SAIs of Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia Costa Rica , Panama and Mexico.
