30% growth forecast for anchovy catches in 2015

Anchovy catches, the main raw material used to manufacture fish meal, of which Peru is the world leader, could increase by at least 30% this year, according to the Peruvian government.

The Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Juan Requejo said that this remedy seems to have recovered after a moderate El Niño weather phenomenon, which warms the Pacific.

"The warming of the water and the condition of anchovy is already a thing of the past, at least for now", Requejo said in an interview with Reuters.

In this situation, the Deputy Minister estimated that this year Anchovy catches could increase at least 30% compared to 2013, based on a projection "Very conservative".

Anchovy catches fell to 2.2 million tons last year, about a third of the volume in a typical year.

After the fleet captured only 68% of its quota in the first season of Fishing 2014, the Government decided to open a second season or to protect juvenile biomass.

Now the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced that the first season of anchovy catch in the south begin next March 26, subject to the outcome of exploratory fishing the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) held between 12 and 16 March in the area.

The IMARPE believes that the season could be extended until June 30, given the increase in biomass (in size and weight) that the anchovy resource has been experiencing since the last assessment.

The Deputy Minister clarified that exploratory fishing Anchovy reveals too many juveniles, the beginning of the fishing season could be delayed for a couple of weeks.

"If conditions continue, we are talking about a figure than 2 million tons and 2.5 million tons (of fishing quota for the center and north of the country)"Said Deputy Reuters.

"They will be able to quite catch"He said.
