European fishermen reduce accumulation of marine debris

The agreement with the NGO WFO involves the fishing fleet in cleanup and investigation

European fishermen have pledged to reduce the accumulation of marine debris, after the agreement signed by the owners of the European Union (grouped in the Europęche association) and the NGO Waste Free Oceans (WFO). The agreement directly involves performing on awareness raising, cleaning and research. “The goal of this partnership is to promote the joint work of the fishermen and the plastics industry to prevent and eliminate this pollution of the oceans”Said the President of Europêche and CEPESCA, Javier Garat.

The pact includes the collection and removal of waste such as plastics, ropes and fishing nets when ships arrive in port as well as participation in cleanup actions, particularly in the areas particularly affected. The initiative can count on support from the European Maritime Fisheries Fund.
