CHILE – CELAC FAO and coordinate their efforts to eradicate hunger

Representatives of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, CELAC, will meet tomorrow with FAO experts in Santiago de Chile to coordinate their agendas and refine the implementation strategy of the Plan for Food Security, Nutrition and Hunger Eradication 2025 CELAC

The Santiago meeting, which can be followed live streaming at 14 hrs, seeks to deepen regional synergies between the work of FAO and the Food Safety Plan of CELAC for reinforcement and to seek the greatest possible integration between its national, subregional and regional interventions.

According to FAO, the region was the first in the world to propose the goal of eradicating hunger by 2025, through the Latin America and Caribbean Initiative Without Hunger, a goal that has been fully accepted by the CELAC in his new food safety plan.

Coordination at the highest level

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Pro-Tempore Presidency of CELAC, currently held by Ecuador, and CELAC Quartet, composed of Costa Rica (President Pro-Tempore 2014), Dominican Republic (which will assume the presidency in 2016)

The meeting will also be attended by the Chancellor and Minister of Agriculture of Chile, Heraldo Muñoz and Carlos Furche, and representatives and ambassadors of Argentina, Ecuador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Venezuela and the Group of Latin American and the Caribbean to the United Nations (GRULAC), who bring their national views on various aspects of the Plan for Food Security of CELAC.

Alicia Barcenas, Executive Secretary of ECLAC and Carlos Alvarez Secretary General of LAIA also participate in the discussions on the four pillars of the Plan:

1. Strategies and national and regional public policies for food security

2. timely and sustainable access to safe, adequate, sufficient and nutritious food for all people

3. Nutritional Wellness assurance and nutrients to all vulnerable groups

4. Socio-natural Stable production and timely care disaster

Plan of CELAC could help the region achieve the goal of CMA

According to FAO, Latin America and the Caribbean is the only region of the world already achieved the goal of hunger the first Millennium Development Goal, to halve the proportion of hungry people from 1990-92 levels.

Also, the region is very close to achieving the ambitious goal of the World Food Summit: if 2.75 million people outnumber the hungry during 2015, the region will have been the only one in the world to halve the total number of people who suffer from hunger from 1990-92 levels.
