Peru exports virtually almost all the US Tilapia

Management Services and Extractive Industries Association of Exporters (ADEX) reported that Tilapia exports totaled between January and August 2014 a total of US $ 1 million to 049 million caused an acceleration of 11.6% compared to the same period previous year (US $ 939,000).

The main item exported was "fresh or chilled fillets of Tilapia" which accounted for 99.6% of global shipments. However, in previous years it was possible to sell the items "Tilapia frozen, excluding livers and roes" and "frozen tilapia fillets."

In this regard, the Head of that area of the exporter guild, Marianella Hernández, said that "Our country has great opportunities to export this species, which are not yet exploited."

He explained that Tilapia is a species that is sold in the form of living species, in addition to whole and fillets (both fresh and frozen cases) and whose main market is the United States, which claimed 99.6% of Peruvian shipments between January and August (17.1% rise in purchases).

It further argued that the US market pays a better price for tilapia alive, adding that that marine species is a substitute cojinova and Chita. "For your good taste and texture is the favorite in the market of fishery products in the north country", Complemented Hernandez.

The Executive also stated that there is no expectation of Tilapia exports growth this year, it is clear compared to 2013. Today, the production of this fish product is being earmarked for the domestic market, while its good demand has imports from China increase.

Finalmente, señaló que al Perú le falta desarrollar aún los envíos de Tilapia al exterior, tal como sucede con Colombia, "Country of the region that has more experience in this regard, and with whom we compete"
