Seafood exports increased by 19.5% between January and August

Between January and August this year, seafood exports amounted to US $ 2.154 million, an increase of 19.5 percent over the same period in 2013 when he won US $ 1.802 million, today reported Exporters Association (Adex).

The Manager of Services and Extractive Industries Adex, Marianella Hernández, said this growth was driven by higher sales of flour and fish oil.

In this respect, he indicated that fish meal increased 16.3 percent, while the fish oil grew 39.5 percent.

According to figures from the Business Intelligence System Adex Data Trade, traditional fishing grew by 20.8 percent in the period mentioned above, accounting for 63.5 percent of total fish exports.

He also stressed that China is the main market for traditional fishing, followed by Germany, Chile, Japan, Denmark, Vietnam, Canada and Belgium.

Meanwhile, non-traditional fish increased by 17.3 percent, accumulated 784.9 million dollars, mostly represented by molluscs and higher shipments to Spain squid and scallops to France and the United States.

Another product that stood out for example in Japan, was the eel (butterfly cut) increased 80 percent, driven by increased shipments to Japan market.

Meanwhile, crustaceans also registered growth, reaching 38.9 percent in that period.

The exporter guild recalled that the United States is the main destination for nontraditional fish exports, followed by China, Spain, South Korea, France, Thailand, Japan, Italy and Venezuela.

The US market demand mainly species like shrimp tails shelled, frozen fillets Perico and Shell fan.
