Aquaculture Promotion Act will raise exports to more than USD 300 million

Exports of aquaculture products in 2014 generated a total of USD 295.5 million in revenue, representing a slight contraction of 0.05% over the previous year.

According to the Association of Exporters (ADEX), this slight decline is due in large part to the lack of a promoter context, a situation that could be overcome in the short term if the Aquaculture Promotion Act was adopted, which is in the hands of Congress Republic.

This legal framework can be enriched by the contributions of the Working Committee created by the Vice Ministry of Fishery PRODUCE.

ADEX is represented by its Chairman of the Committee for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Humberto Speziani, who referred to the aquaculture sector is awaiting approval, as would promote the activity and provide the same benefits of the Agrarian Law, which allowed the development of agricultural exports.

"The fisheries development in Peru is in Aquaculture"He said. He also explained that the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO) promotes an interesting initiative for the world to grow on the side of aquaculture, given that the mining industry is reaching almost to its limit.

"That's very good because it is not only for export but also for food security of the country", Speziani said.

He noted that this activity could allow a great development not only of the Costa but the Sierra and Selva, as in Brazil.

He stressed that the Tilapia has an established market and native species such as the paiche and Gamitana has potential.

"In the Sierra should improve the cultivation of trout and Costa sole, Chita, the Choros, abalone, scallops and prawns. The shrimp has a huge global market "He stressed.

"The possibilities are enormous aquaculture, but few will be a promoter Act investors to venture into that business. That's why this activity should have similar incentives to the Land Law on labor and tax aspects "He said.

At present, shrimp, scallops, trout, tilapia and Paiche are the main Peruvian aquaculture products that are exported.

In 2014, foreign sales totaled Prawn USD 162.1 million, which represented an increase of 25% compared to 2013 (USD 128.9 million). USA. was the main market, followed by Spain, France, South Korea, Russia and Canada.

Fan Shell ranked second, with exports totaling USD 124.6 million (-19%). France, with a share of 44% of total shipments, was is the main market, followed by the US, Belgium, Canada and Italy.
