INDIA – The sustained growth of shrimp fisheries exports

India seems to be about to achieve its goal of export of fish products worth US $ 6 billion this year, partly due to increased sales to the United States and a shortage of shrimp culture in the countries of Southeast Asia.

According to statistics Development Authority Marine Products Export (MPEDA), in the seven months to the end of October this year, seafood exports rose 16% yoy in rupees to Rs 196,530 million, and nearly 17% in US dollars USD 3.33 billion reported Economic Times.

MPEDA attributes the growth in exports mainly to increased production and exports of shrimp L. vannamei.

The international market situation contributed, since some of the major producing countries are still recovering from the impact of early mortality syndrome (EMS), and other problems faced by the issue of antibiotic residues.

“Production in Thailand is not yet in full swing. The export of products Sea has been affected by the problems of antibiotics in Vietnam. A few shipments from India were also rejected due to the presence of antibiotics. But the numbers are too low to be a concern”, said the President of All India Shrimp Hatcheries, L Satyanarayana.

Aquaculture Indians remain hopeful despite the fall in the price of Vannamei Shrimp, since the country's exports maintained a sustained level.

“To meet global demand, farms in India increased production to around 300,000 tonnes last year, when fish exports amounted to INR 302,130 million (USD 4.875 billion). This fiscal year is expected to reach 350,000 tons”, Satyanarayana said.

Considering the period from April to October 2014, frozen shrimp emerged as the main sea product exports, both in terms of quantity and overseas earnings, reported The New Indian Express.

In terms of value, accounted for 73.14% of total revenues and in terms of quantity, the proportion of frozen shrimp was 39.73%, followed by frozen fish, frozen cuttlefish and frozen squid.

During the analyzed period of seven months (April-October 2014), the US was the largest buyer of products of the Sea of India, followed by Southeast Asia, European Union, Japan, the Middle East and China.
