FAO fisheries scientific research audit

The Ministry of Production (Produce) and the Institute of Marine Peru (Imarpe) asked the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO) to begin an audit of the scientific studies of national fisheries.

The objective of the International Technical Audit Imarpe is to strengthen and enhance their scientific work.
The Institute aims to validate the assessment methodologies used in its biological and scientific research, since they underlie and justify major policy decisions taken by the Government to ensure the sustainability of fishery resources.

Evaluation and verification performed by the team of international consultants has the following two main objectives:
Analyze the different methodologies and procedures, and the primary information used by Imarpe for assessing the status of fish stocks relative to use, setting of fishing quotas and other management recommendations for fisheries cuatroprincipales: anchovy, squid, hake and mackerel;
Assess the organizational structure and resources are there Imarpe for the proper performance of their duties and mission; and analyze and evaluate the scientific output of the Institute and the factors affecting scientific productivity of its staff.

The first mission of the audit is conducted by Francisco Sánchez Arreguin, the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine Sciences (CICIMAR) of Mexico, who will serve as consultant on Assessment and Management of Fishery Resources.

On the other hand, Produce transferred to Imarpe and the Technological Institute of Production (ITP) about PEN 3 million (USD 1 million), money that will allow these organisms to make new scientific and technological research.

Furthermore, studies conducted Imarpe estimating biológicopesqueros parameters for the sustainable management of marine resources; and strengthening prevention system for early warning of potentially toxic species in production areas for bivalve molluscs: Paita, Chimbote, Callao and Pisco.
Both studies have a total budget of GBP 2.7 million (USD 985,500).
