Blue Growth: Harnessing the potential of oceans and seas

The fisheries sector is now an industry of billions of dollars and a vital source of food, employment, trade, economic welfare and recreation.

What is the blue growth?
The concept of "blue economy" came out of the Rio 20 in 2012 and emphasizes the conservation and sustainable management, based on the premise that healthy ocean ecosystems are more productive and are the only way to ensure sustainable economies based on the sea.
To support the shift to this new approach, FAO established a new Blue Growth Initiative, through which it will assist countries in the development and implementation of the agendas of the economy and the blue growth.

Why the blue growth?
The blue growth is further tap the potential of the oceans, seas and coasts for:
Remove harmful subsidies that contribute to overfishing and instead encourage strategies to improve the conservation, sustainable fishing permit and end illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Developing sectors with a high potential for sustainable jobs, such as aquaculture, tourism and marine biotechnology.

Ensuring standards as foster cooperation among countries.

Acting as a catalyst for policy development, investment and innovation in support of food security, poverty reduction and sustainable management of aquatic resources.

How did you implement?

Aquaculture: Farming of fish, shellfish and marine plants responsibly.

Blue Biotechnology: Exploring the biodiversity of the sea, allowing us to develop new pharmaceuticals or industrial enzymes that can withstand extreme conditions and have a high economic value.
Coastal and marine tourism: Develop and implement the MSP and coastal management strategies.

Mineral resources provide economic incentives to explore the mineral resources of the seabed.
Blue Energy: Exploding the next generation of marine renewable energy to create employment opportunities and energy security.
