CHILE – Latin America and the Caribbean seek solutions to malnutrition during the Second International Conference on Nutrition CIN2

Obesity affects 23% of adults in Latin America and the Caribbean, while 37 million people still live in hunger. To find common to these two faces of malnutrition solutions, governments in the region will participate in the Second International Conference on Nutrition -CIN2- from 19 to 21 November at FAO headquarters in Rome.

The CIN2 is a high-level intergovernmental conference which aims to focus world attention on malnutrition in all its forms: malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity. It will be the first global forum to address these problems so far this century.

"Globally about 805 million people living in hunger, 2 000 million suffer from micronutrient deficiencies and over 500 million are obese. Having so many hungry and malnourished people in the XXI century is unacceptable. The CIN2 looking to find a common and concerted response to these enormous challenges"Said Eve Crowley, Deputy Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Among the main representatives of the region are attending the First Lady of Peru, Nadine Heredia, Vice-President of the Republic of Guatemala, Roxana Baldetti, the Minister of Rural Development of Bolivia, Nemesia Achacollo, the Minister of Health of Brazil, Arthur

"Latin America and the Caribbean was the only developing region of the world that advance reached the hunger target of Millennium Development Goals, the result of regional political commitment, and is key countries to share their experiences with the world to meet the nutrition challenges of the century "Said Eve Crowley.

The double burden of malnutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean

Although the region has become an example for the rest of the world, adopting a pioneer Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative 2025 Hunger, hunger still affects 6.1% of the regional population, while 7.1 million children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition.

The Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent nutritional problem affects 44.5% of children and 22.5% of women of childbearing age

The other side of malnutrition-the overweight and obesity-have become a growing problem for many countries, affecting both children and adults. 3.8 million children under five are overweight.

The world adopt a firm commitment against malnutrition

During the Conference, it is expected that countries adopt two main cementing its commitment against malnutrition documents: the Rome Declaration on Nutrition and Framework for Action.

The Rome Declaration on Nutrition is a political document that seeks to respond to the issues and challenges related to nutrition.

The Framework for Action provides a set of policy options and voluntary strategies for governments, in cooperation with other stakeholders, used to meet the commitments of the Rome Declaration on Nutrition. The framework provides a list of 60 recommendations for policies and strategies that can be incorporated into national plans for nutrition, health, agriculture, development and investment for better nutrition for all.
