SNP calls for urgent action to recover Anchovy fishing levels

The National Fisheries Society (SNP) noted that an important fishing for anchovy reduction is recorded, so an emergency measure to allow industrial fishing from the five mile, where the resource is required.

It is noted that according to Supreme Decree No. 005, issued in 2012 by the Ministry of Production, states that you can only fish for direct human consumption within the first 10 miles of the Peruvian Sea.

“We need an emergency measure, and tomorrow will be fishing between five mile and ten, with Anchovy is, because otherwise, fishing shrink”Said the President of the SNP, Elena Conterno.

During his presentation to the Committee on Production of Congress, said that the decline in fishing due to the warming of the sea and the existing regulations affecting the catch.

"The warming we experience already affected the fishery resource, it has moved away from the coast and brought him south," he said.

He said that in the first season of 2014, the fee is two million 530 thousand metric tons (MT), but so far has fish 625.980 tonnes, ie 25 percent of the share.

He added that in the eight and a half weeks remaining until the season finale will be achieved only 949.161 MT fishing, which will make a total of 575.141 million MT, ie 62 percent of the fee.

"Our projection is to reach at least one means of capturing TM, which is much less than a million and a share, so the season will be fair," he said.

He insisted that the rule has had a strong impact on fisheries in the south and in 2009 Peru and Chile fished the same, but last year Peru captured the third of Chile.

Conterno said the SNP have already met with the Ministry of Production to explain the problem and require swift action.

"The Ministry stated that they know the regulatory framework and are awaiting the findings of the studies to make their decision," he said.

For his part, the Chairman of the Board of the Instituto del Mar del Peru (Imarpe), Germán Vásquez, said that this week would be the results of studies of the warming of the sea, allowing them to give an opinion.

"The normal work and the weekend is over, now begins the work of staff and hope to have results this week," he said.

He added that if a greater presence of young species was detected not be advisable to fish from the five mile.

"The balance would tip in favor if more resources from the 10 mile reach five. However, if any number of youth, despite having greater resources, would be a negative factor, "he said.
