SNP: Fishing could add 0.2 percentage points to GDP

The fisheries sector to the national economy would provide S / 8.812 million this year, down from S / 941 million with respect to its participation in 2013 due to global sea and fishing restrictions in the first 10 miles of the coast, the National Fisheries Society (SNP) said.

For the fishing guild, contribution to national GDP would be higher if the government implemented two measures: the extension of the period for anchovy fishing beyond July 31 and the extension of the extraction area to a higher area Peruvian coast. For the SNP these provisions are not put at risk the sustainability of the resource.

“If the government implements corrective measures the contribution of fisheries to the economy could be up to S / .1.000 million more this year, up to the S / 9,812,000, which Peru's economy may grow 0.2 % over 2014”He highlighted the organization.
In this regard, the company argued that the beginning of the season, low catches were reported to the warm sea temperature, whereas in early July the cold began to get to the coast, and thus improving the capture of Anchovies .

FISHING ESTIMATES
With INEI data, the trade association estimated that this year, 3.51 million tons of anchovy, almost half of the average annual landings were between 2000 and 2011, reaching 6.8 million tons per year would be landed .
“This situation does not improve in the coming weeks, because until the first week of July had removed only 55% of the allocated quota, when in previous years had already reached 95% of it, missing only until end of month to the end of the fishing season”, anotó la SNP.

Similarly, it was projected that the effect would be felt less fish exports. Thus, it would be about $ 1.823 million in shipments of fish meal and oil, a $ 500 million less than in 2012.
“As is the catch level would no longer fish Anchovy 820,000 tonnes (32% of total quota), implying a loss in exports of US $ 385 million”He said.
