Tuna Fishing Tropical Northeast Pacific, a step forward towards the MSC assessment

(Seattle, WA) – The fishery for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and Keg (Katsuwonus pelamis) caught by purse seine in the Northeast Tropical Pacific is undergoing voluntarily gaze and scrutiny of the process of independent evaluation of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

The MSC standard is the most robust and credible world for the certification of environmentally sustainable wild fisheries. The transparent process of evaluation will examine the impact of fishing on fish stocks and the marine ecosystem. The process of managing the fishery will also be assessed to ensure they are taking all necessary steps to protect the ocean environment for future generations.

El encargado de soporte a las pesquerías de MSC Américas, Dan Averill, señaló, "We welcome the decision of this fishery to enter the MSC assessment process. Which will result in a detailed and transparent scrutiny and information on the operations of the fishery and the impacts they have on fish stocks and the entire ecosystem. "

The Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna SCS has selected Global Services to conduct the evaluation.

The client for this assessment is the Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna, a group of five leaders in fishing for yellowfin tuna and skipjack in the Northeast Pacific Ocean Tropical companies. Most of the catch is marketed in Mexico, Europe and Latin America as canned tuna and frozen fillet.

Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna has selected SCS Global Services to assess the fishery under rigorous scientific standard set by the MSC.

“Nuestros miembros comparten la visión de tener océanos saludables y una pesquería sustentable, y estamos 100% comprometidos con mejorar continuamente nuestras prácticas de pesca para asegurar la sustentabilidad de nuestra pesquería, como parte de un ecosistema marino saludable, Lazarus said Luis Vallés, representing the Alliance for Sustainable Pacific Tuna. "Through the transparent MSC assessment process, we hope to work with groups and audiences of interest about our methods of fishing, following our tradition of using innovative practices to achieve advances in scientific standards for sustainable fisheries, and reaffirm our commitment to sustainability. SCS Global Services selected to lead this independent evaluation because of its reputation for conducting exceptionally robust and comprehensive manner. "

MSC standard for sustainable fishing.

The evaluation will assess the fishery against the standards for sustainable fisheries in the MSC, which were developed during the past 15 years in consultation with NGOs, marine scientists and industry experts.

The standard is based on three core principles:

  • Maintaining healthy populations of target species;
  • Maintaining the integrity, productivity and resilience of the marine ecosystem (including habitat and other species involved in the fishery); and
  • An efficient.

If certified, the fishery will have to meet strict standards for sustainability of the MSC, make improvements to complete any conditions set by the certification to meet international best practices, and undergo annual reviews throughout the certification period five

The Global Impact Report MSC and the Annual Report 2013-14 shows that fisheries in the MSC certification program are getting improvements to the marine environment. Since 1999, those who have achieved MSC certification have made 575 improvements to their fishing practices, including measures to reduce bycatch of endangered species, restore habitats and improve the scientific understanding of marine ecosystems. These changes are often encouraged by increased market demand and, in some cases, a higher or "premium" price for sustainable seafood.
