Eastern Pacific countries seek to improve the management Tuna

Project partners “Common Oceans Tuna”, Including the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are, International Seafood Sustainability Organisation (ISSF) and WWF celebrate the commitment of developing countries

Representatives of the Eastern Pacific that are members of the IATTC met in Panama with global experts to discuss aspects of managing sustainable tuna fishing.

As is happening in regional fisheries organizations similar Ordinance worldwide, CIAT members have initiated a new process to apply a precautionary approach by adopting strategies to capture. The aim is to agree on a clear initial framework for making decisions on measures to be taken if the stocks are declining or need to be rebuilt, or if fishing mortality is excessive.

The ideas presented in the workshop will help the representatives of coastal States to become familiar with the principles behind the exploitation strategies and therefore enable them to participate meaningfully in the process of developing strategies for key stocks managed by the IATTC.

The workshop was part of the overall project "Common Oceans: Sustainable Management of Tuna Fishing and conservation of biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ)". The project is partially funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and coordinated by FAO.

El proyecto del Atún se centra en diferentes componentes, y el taller de Panamá fue parte del primer componente, “supporting the implementation of the management of fisheries and sustainable and efficient practices Fishing”.

The objective was to support better understanding of the application of the precautionary approach through strategies of capture by regional management organizations tuna fisheries.
