About eight million tons of plastic waste reaching the world's oceans every year, scientists assured.
Eight million tons of plastic serve to cover the area of Manhattan (New York) 34 times until the ankle.
That amount is equivalent to five grocery bags full of plastic waste for every 30 inches of coastline in the world, said the lead researcher, Dr. Jenna Jambeck, University of Georgia, US ..
More than half of plastic waste that end up in the oceans comes from five countries: China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
China is responsible for 28% of these wastes.
The details were disclosed in the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, for its acronym in English).
