New Zealand – Fishing industry supports protection of endangered seabirds

Seafood New Zealand celebrated the collaborative efforts of the Working Group of the Black Petrel to develop ways to reduce the risk that fishing causes this Seabird threatened.

“Our industry recognizes the true value of collaborating with organizations to find long-term solutions and effective on how to protect marine wildlife, including seabirds”, said Tim Pankhurst, CEO of Seafood New Zealand.

The Fund Solutions Seabirds South (Southern Seabird Solutions Trust), working with professional skippers, crews and anglers to reduce damage to seabirds through Fisheries play an important role in meeting the relevant organizations.

“The commercial fishing industry has been a strong supporter and sponsor of the fund, which has been instrumental in working with commercial fishermen to reduce bycatch of seabirds in a practical way”Said the President of Seafood New Zealand.

“Their approach is collaborative and based on shared learning, often acquired in workshops with fishermen around the country. It's great to see that this extends to working with the black petrel.”
