Japan resumed research on whale hunt in the Antarctic without

Japanese whalers will perform Thursday from research on whales in Antarctica but hunt, announced Tuesday the Japan Fisheries Agency.

These studies observation and sampling of skin, nonlethal principle, by the Institute for Research on Cetaceans, they will be held until March 28, the source said.

The ships set sail from the port of Shimonoseki (southwest), he said the agency said in a brief statement.

"The harpoons were it removed from the ships to the extent that the research does not involve the capture of whales," he added.

Japan renounced Whaling in Antarctica during the 2014-2015 season, after a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Faced with a demand for Australia, the ICJ held that Japan used commercial research activity. Environmental organizations fear, however, that Japan ignore the ICJ decision and resume hunting whales in the 2015-2016 season.

Japan submitted to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and its scientific commission an annual target catch of 333 minke whales, instead of the 900 included in the program censured by the ICJ.

According to the Japanese authorities that trapping level is necessary to define the age of the whale population and, therefore, the level of fishing that does not endanger the species.

Japan took 251 minke whales in the Antarctic in the 2013-2014 season and 103 the previous year.

At the same time, Japan continues to hunt whales "in the name of science" in the Pacific Northwest, where caught 132 whales in 2013.
