IMARPE do not open second season of Anchovies

The Sea Institute of Peru (IMARPE) do not open the second season of anchovy fishing until recovery of the fishery becomes apparent and environmental conditions normalize.

The recommendation is part of the report of the institute after completion of Operation Eureka LXVII, which involved the industrial fishing sector (industrial fleet of steel and industrial wood).

This study has confirmed the major changes is presenting the marine environment due to recurring impact of Kelvin waves.

The report submitted by the IMARPE details that habitat is fairly small Anchoveta both horizontally and vertically, and which shows a discontinuous distribution and a very low density in the northern region. Between San Juan and Punta Infiernillos density was higher, but not comparable to that observed at normal conditions.

Similarly, it was observed that a large portion of the North Stock - Anchovy Center is comprised of juveniles, most of them born during summer 2014 and a small amount born during the recent winter reproductive process. The few individuals are observed spawning adults.

On the other hand, could identify a total of 28 different species Anchovy, highlighting the presence of jellyfish, squid, Munida, Vinciguerria; some coastal species such as smelt and Butterfish; or traszonales and highly migratory species such as mackerel, Bonito and Perico.

Scientists also highlight the overlap in the distribution of typical cold and warm water as a result of the intrusion of ocean waters to the coastal area of the Peruvian Sea species.

The IMARPE report concludes with the recommendation of “keep the fishery closed Stock Norte - Center Anchoveta until recovery and environmental conditions have normalized become evident, while continuing monitoring and ecosystem Anchovies”.
