Strong increase exports recorded Tilapia

In the first two months of this year Tilapia Peru exported a total of 434,500, an amount that represents an increase of 79.3% year on year, according to statistics from the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

Income earned in the first two months exceed those of the same period of the last five years: in the first quarter of 2010 Tilapia were exported products worth USD 64,000; in 2011, for $ 129,300; in 2012, USD 306,500; in 2013, USD 229,600; and in 2014, USD 242,300.

However, Management Services and Extractive Industries Adex explained that the domestic market absorbs most of Tilapia produced, thanks to the good prices paid, and therefore volumes shipped are not very large, El Peruano.

The main producing regions Tilapia are Piura, Lima (Huacho) and San Martin.

Tilapia production in northern Peru among 1,200 and 1,500 tonnes to supermarkets and wholesalers, requiring higher to meet the demand presentations (fillet) is intended size.

Meanwhile, the production of San Martín among 1,000 and 1,200 tonnes remains in the region because it fits the local demand.

The main market for Peruvian Tilapia in January and February this year was the US, with imports -USD 396,400, which represented 91.2% of total value.

Further back the Ecuadorian and French markets were located.

Adex noted that despite having quite strong competitors in the region such as Colombia and Ecuador, US there is still a small niche for Peruvian tilapia.

Currently there are 668 fish farms cultivating Tilapia in Peru. Of that number, 476 are subsistence aquaculture centers with limited resources; 188, smaller scale; and 4 larger scale. The area devoted to the production of this fish amounted to 394.5 hectares.
