FAO has food safety plan to eradicate hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean

During his participation in the meeting of Foreign Ministers in the framework of the Third Summit of the Community of Latin American and the Caribbean, José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of FAO, presented the Plan for Food Security, Nutrition and Hunger Eradication 2025 CELAC.

"This proposal is a tool to help the countries of the CELAC to develop national plans to transform into reality the commitment already made to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty in the region"Said Graziano da Silva.

The plan, developed by FAO with the support of the Latin American Integration Association (LAIA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) at the request of the Second Summit of CELAC, is based on four pillars that address

The plan systematized successful experiences in the region to facilitate its application in other regions of the world and identifies potential links between areas that can generate virtuous circles of development.

Achievements of Latin America and the Caribbean in the fight against hunger

According to FAO, Latin America and the Caribbean is the only region of the world already achieved the goal of the First Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of people suffering from hunger by the year 2015. The region is on the verge of also achieving the objective of the World Food Summit of halving the total number of undernourished people.

Raúl Benítez, FAO Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, said that "What distinguishes Latin America and the Caribbean is the level of political commitment that exists to food security, which is expressed in a variety of strategies and public policies focused on vulnerable populations."

Benitez said that the region was a pioneer in its proposal to eradicate hunger by 2025, shaping the Latin American and Caribbean Initiative Without Hunger (HFLACI), a political commitment by all countries in the region in 2005.
