USA – Tilapia imports remain stable

Tilapia has become a very popular fish in America.

According to information provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and US (NOAA, for its acronym in English), China ranks as one of the leading exporters of tilapia, mainly frozen, United States.

As for the Latin American countries, include shipments, especially fresh Tilapia, of Honduras, with 10,000 tonnes in 2014, some $ 81 million, showing a clear increase from 2013, when 8,260 tons were exported US $ 65 million.

Also Costa Rica, whose Tilapia exports to the US market exceeded 5,450 tons in 2014, worth about $ 42 million. Here, the figures were slightly lower than last year, when some 6,790 tons were sent for about $ 54 million.

Recall that the Chilean AquaChile, through its subsidiary, Aqua Group International Corporation, is present in the culture of this species in Costa Rica, with a production capacity of around 19,000 tonnes of whole tilapia harvested annually, an amount that is expected to increase to 25,000 tonnes product of the future merger between AquaChile and Marine Harvest Chile.

Another country with significant shipments is Ecuador, with 2,517 tons of Tilapia sent to America in 2014, worth nearly US $ 15 million. This country also decreased their shipments, because in 2013 it exported more than 5,660 tons for about $ 36 million.
