Imarpe specialists investigating death of sea lions in Chimbote

Two specialists Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE) have reached Chimbote, Ancash Region, to conduct a study to determine the causes of death of 500 sea lions found at a spa.

The professionals belonging to the Area of ​​Higher Predators and have started their work by undertaking a tour of the various spas in this region.

The zonal Chief Imarpe in Chimbote, Isaiah Gonzales Chavez explained that in addition to analyzing the causes of the deaths of mammals, a census of the various colonies that exist in this part of the country will be held.

He explained that this census will help to know not only the number of species that exist, but also gender, age and size.

"The Ancash Region is being attended to in the first instance, due to the delicate situation and the constant reports of dead sea lions," he said.

He estimated that a first report Imarpe technicians could be ready in a week.

"Preliminarily it is presumed that it could be the lack of food, which causes this, because we all know about the shortage of Anchoveta in Áncash, however, nothing is ruled out yet," he said.

The last finding of dead seals in Ancash, was the last weekend at the beach Anconcillo in Samanco, where 500 stranded sea lions were found.
