SPAIN – The first Meros Aquaculture could reach markets in ten years

Researchers from the Institute of Oceanography (IEO) Spanish leading one of the subprojects of this ambitious initiative aimed at achieving cultivation or Grouper Grouper (Polyprion americanus), and during these days, all project members meet to coordinate

The project in Galicia

In Galicia most of the work on the cultivation or Grouper Grouper focuses due to the great possibilities that this species has awakened among Aquaculture. It is a fast growing species -can get to grow the order of six kilograms per year- and a high price in the market. It is also a species under great pressure by both professional and sporting fishing sector and is included in the red list of endangered species. Virtually all Grouper landed in our ports come from fisheries in the Azores but the geographical distribution of this species is virtually universal.

This part of the project or Grouper Grouper is led by the Oceanographic Centre of Vigo, belonging to the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and participate in it also the Rural Environment Ministry and Mariño of the Xunta de Galicia, with its centers of CIMA (Vilaxoán

Besides other Spanish and European institutions involved such as the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR), the French Research Institute for Exploration of the Sea (IFREMER), the University of La Laguna, the University of Las Palmas and the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR).

"So far, the results are encouraging and possibilities of cultivation of this species of great commercial value are really good"Explains José Benito Pelerin, Researcher Oceanographic Center of Vigo and coordinator of the work on the Chern. Described the reproductive cycle of the Chern, protocols have been developed hormonal induction of spawning and fertilization procedures in vitro, have been formulated diets for broodstock and larvae, and has developed a market study on the potential of this species in the short and long term, among other tasks. "If all goes well, in ten years we could have the first grouper aquaculture markets"Says Peleteiro.

Six new species

In this project 38 partners from twelve countries, of which four are small and medium enterprises and two multinational related to animal feeding involved. The remaining 32 members are research organizations, foundations and universities spread throughout the territory of the European Union, where in addition also countries like Norway and Israel participate.

The project has a cash prize of US $ 11.8 million, distributed among the partners according to their responsibilities, and is coordinated by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research.

After a thorough and conclusive study among all countries, it was decided to delve into the possibilities of growing Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus), the Seriola (Seriola dumerilii), the mujel (Mujil cephalus), the Corvina (Argirosomus regius) Perch

Spain participates in this project by providing technology in growing Seriola, mujel, Corvina and Mero / Grouper. The Spanish Institute of Oceanography, with the research team of the Oceanographic Center of Vigo, Canary Islands and Murcia collaborate in developing the cultivation of Grouper / Mero (Vigo) and Seriola (Canaries and Murcia).
