The General Secretariat of Fisheries, Producers Association of Large Tuna Freezers (Opagac) and the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) signed a memorandum of understanding to implement a new joint pilot project that will allow the Spanish Government to monitor fishing vessels that
The innovative pilot project, which began in November 2014, will provide fishing vessels owned Spanish flag and observing systems that make it possible to monitor fishing fleet to detect unidentified or suspicious activities. The information will be transmitted in real Fisheries Control Center of the General Secretariat of Fisheries in Madrid, where it will be analyzed by fisheries inspectors with additional support from representatives of the EJF specialized in surveillance of fishing vessels time.
The aim of this new project is to combat IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) or fishing “pirate” in West Africa.
This initiative complements other than the EJF being implemented in the region of West Africa, as part of the ambitious and innovative Pesquera Intelligence Network (FIN) organization, which gathers evidence of the activities of fishing vessels and promotes transparency
Present in Sierra Leone and Liberia since 2006, the EJF has prompted multiple arrests pirate fishing vessels in collaboration with local and international institutions.
The General Secretariat of Fisheries participated in a training session organized by Opagac last November 25 in Bermeo, Vizcaya, to provide all stakeholders with an overview of international and European legal framework and supporting this initiative to combat IUU fishing and as IT training on technologies that will be used in the observation. Security protocols and strict confidentiality remembered as IUU Fishing and Fishing “pirate” often linked to other illegal activities such as human trafficking, drug trafficking and weapons, and money laundering.
“The use of the latest technologies on vessels operating at sea can better observe the fishing activities taking place in West Africa, where fisheries are a key source for food security and livelihoods, is rampant IUU Fishing and fish populations are seriously threatened. Fundamentally, the use of technology in this way reduces the cost to a minimum and maximizes efficiency”Said Steve Trent, executive director of the EJF.
“The information collected through this innovative project will be discussed along with other sources of information, including port records and satellite technology, to ensure it is solid. We are proud to work with the Spanish government to take a stand against IUU Fishing, and thank vessels have volunteered to participate in this project, because legal fishing operators have an important role in our fight to end IUU fishing in the world's oceans”He concluded.
