The proportion of people suffering from malnutrition in the country fell from 31.6% to 8.7% over the past two decades, according to The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2014, released today by FAO, IFAD and WFP.

So, having already reached simultaneously the hunger target of the first Millennium Development Goals and the World Food Summit, Peru is one of the 8 countries in the region with the fastest progress in fighting hunger, along with Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

The total number of people living with hunger in Peru has also dropped from 7 million in 1990-92 to 2.7 million in 2012, which means that in just over two decades, four million men women and children passed the underfeeding.

In the region, the results are also positive: in the same period, 31.5 million people overcome hunger, from 68.5 million in 1990-92 to 37 million in 2012.

The report was published jointly by FAO, IFAD and WFP, whose head Jose Graziano da Silva, Kanayo F. Nwanze and Ertharin Cousin from Rome specially highlighted the achievements of the region in the foreword: "Latin America and the Caribbean is the region that has shown the most progress in reducing hunger, reducing its prevalence in nearly two-thirds since the beginning of 1990. In the present scenario, 65% of people suffering from hunger are in Asia, 28% in Africa, 4.6% in LAC, 2% in developed regions and 0.2% in Oceania.
