Scientists recommend that ban Anchovies

A report by the Marine Institute of Peru (Imarpe) on the situation in northern and central stock Anchovy recommends that the Ministry of Production (Produce) suspended maintain this resource extraction.

In the paper, the scientists explain that there are abnormal environmental conditions such as large bodies of warm water (Kelvin waves) and warm ocean waters, which are very favorable for the pelagic resource, whose habitat is the cold water.

Also note that these climatic and environmental factors have impacted directly on the distribution of oxygen, nutrients in the sea and in the depth of the thermocline (layer within a body of water where the temperature changes rapidly with depth).

They also explain the high frequency of Kelvin waves causes a cumulative effect on the oceanographic properties of the Sea, affecting significantly to phytoplankton biomass and reducing the extent of coastal habitat and fertility.

As a result of these circumstances, there has been a significant decline in the biomass of the anchovy, below the stock in recent years.

Therefore recommends keeping Imarpe closed until environmental conditions normalize and the stock recovers.

Meanwhile, scientists at the Institute will intensify the monitoring of environmental conditions and will start in the last week of October, a new cruise Hydroacoustic Assessment of Pelagic Resources in that area, aboard the research vessel Olaya.
