CHILE – Biomass decreases Sardine and Anchovy

Preliminary results of a study of the stocks of anchovy and sardine held in January between Regions V and X indicate a relative decrease in both biomass resources 33% over the same period last year.

The data, presented this week by the Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (FIFG) were collected on board the research vessel Abate Molina, in the area between Quintero (32º40'S) and cove Mansa (41 ° 00'S).

The results of the hydroacoustic assessment indicate that the modal size Anchovy stood at 16.5 cm, with a proportion of juveniles in number of 24%.

For ordinary Sardina, the modal size was 4.0 cm, with a proportion of juveniles in number of 86%.

According to research, the total biomass of sardine was estimated at 1.9 million tonnes, while for Anchovy, the total estimated biomass was 120,000 tons.

Possible causes of reduced biomass of the Sardine, we can mention the effects of environmental variability on spatial resource availability, reduced recruitment, with lower adult survival fraction compared to 2014. This Finally explain the observed decrease in the final cruise average size January 2015.

As for anchovy biomass estimates for this year, said the FIFG are consistent with the low recruitments recorded since 2010.
