CHILE – Recorded considerable drop in fish landings

Landings of products Fisheries and Aquaculture accumulated to February 2015 totaled 338,180 tonnes, 16.3% less than in the first two months of 2014, when 404,000 tonnes were landed.

According to the latest Report of Fisheries and Aquaculture Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), the fishing sector contributed 176,300 tonnes to February 2015, ie 48.3% of the total.

Landings of cuttlefish, mackerel and mackerel respectively accounted for 37.2%, 28.9% and 15.4% of downloads in the extractive sector accumulated in the first quarter of 2015.

These landings were concentrated in regions V and X, which together received the equivalent of 75% of the total. Further back, Regions III and IV, where the discharges covered 25% of the total were located; and XV and II regions, which provided few landings.

As catches of demersal fisheries, February 2015 had landed 1,935 tonnes of southern hake, up 15.5% on the same period in 2014 (2,300 tons).

The main contribution came from the artisanal fleet, with 1,500 tonnes, while industrial vessels landed 386 tonnes.

Subpesca also reported that the landing of hake accumulated February 2015 totaled 2,145 tonnes, representing a fall of 29.7% over the same two months last year (3,055 tons).

Between January and February 2015 445 tons of gold kingclip were landed, compared to 390 tonnes in the same period last year, ie 15% more.

Meanwhile, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) reported that aquaculture harvests totaled in the first two months of the year 174,700 tons. This figure represents a decrease of 23.3% compared to the same two months of 2014, when 227,760 tonnes were harvested.

The main resources produced nationally were Atlantic salmon, Chorito (mussel) and Pacific salmon, which accounted for 52%, 29.8% and 11.9% of the total harvest.

Regions X and XI generated most of the harvest: a total of 108,200 tonnes and 60,900 tonnes respectively.

The Atlantic salmon harvests totaled 90,900 tonnes in the first two months, 5.1% less than the total in the same period of 2014 (95.8345 tons) volume. Most of the production came from Regions X and XI, with 43,200 and 43,500 tons, respectively.

Meanwhile, crops Chorito accumulated in January and February 2015 totaled 52,050 tonnes, similar to that observed in the same two months of 2014 (51,950 tons). 100% of the crops came from the X Region.

The Pacific salmon harvests totaled 20,835 tonnes, 53.3% less than the volume accumulated February 2014 (44,575 tons). Most of the production came from Regions XI (60.5%) and X (39.5%).
