Seek to improve breeding Paiche

Experts Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP) aim to improve parenting Paiche or Pirarucú (Arapaima gigas) by a laboratory study on water spaces where this fish is developed.

The Paiche is a freshwater fish that can grow up to three meters and weigh 200 kilograms. Its meat is highly appreciated not only in the Peruvian jungle but also in the rest of the country, and even in the most exclusive restaurants in the world.

The team of specialists evaluated the growth and development of the aquaculture species in three different water spaces. For these studies, the researchers used different numbers of fingerlings Paiche measuring just over an inch and weighing about 10 grams.

The main objective was to define the optimal amount of fry in a given space of water, Diario La Region.

The researchers used 168 paiche fingerlings for the experiment, and assessed their levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, glucose and triglycerides.

They also analyzed the daily food intake by fry, their weight gain over time and increased in size in order to share with other farmers who grow Paiche all data and to improve production captivity.

The research was conducted in the laboratory facilities of the Experimental Station of the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon, Ucayali region.

The Arapaima gigas is the largest fish flakes fresh water and is known as the 'Giant of the Amazon'.
