BRAZIL – Environmental licenses and funding, two obstacles for the Shrimp Industry

With more favorable conditions in the international market, the shrimp farming industry is gaining more strength in Brazil and turning to look outwards. However, two key factors limiting its growth include environmental licensing and the availability of financing, according to the president of the Brazilian Association of Shrimp Breeders (ABCC), Itamar Rocha.

In the opinion leader, shrimp production requires more attention from state and federal governments, so you can pick up in the region.

Rocha said that the sector suffered because of a US antidumping process and the devaluation of the Brazilian currency, to which lack of financial compensation was added to face competition from Ecuador and Asia. All this resulted in a loss of competitiveness in the international arena, which made the industry was forced to concentrate on the domestic market, Tribuna do Norte.

Now, shrimp entrepreneurs intend to step up production, with better productivity for 2014.

Today there are 1,800 active producers in the country. Most (95%) operates micro, small and medium enterprises, with a use of 22,000 hectares of ponds and a production for this year of 100,000 tons is expected.

In the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in particular the Shrimp Industry was also affected by the massive floods in 2008 and 2009, and the spread of the white spot.

Despite these problems, Rocha said this year are registering encouraging results and production is expected to reach 25,000 tons this year, 10% more than in 2012 (23,000 tonnes).

In addition, the international market situation is favorable “in terms of demand” and prices.

“Within market, we experienced a auspicious for shrimp farming in the Northeast now, what needs to be implemented”Said the businessman during an interview with the Brazilian newspaper.

“We hope to be a good year for shrimp farming, not only by the increasing demand of the domestic market, but also with the extensive possibilities offered by the international market”, he added.

In Brazil, the major shrimp producing states are Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia, Sergipe, Paraíba and Piauí.
