Apply management plan for the Giant Squid

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) launched a Fishery Management Plan (PMP) Giant Squid, with which it seeks to achieve a sustainable use of the resource and preserve this fishery on the west coast of Baja California and the Gulf of California.

Giant Squid (Dosidicus gigas) is the only species of squid that are commercially exploited in Mexico.
This cephalopod has great regional importance, especially in the municipalities of Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur; Guaymas, Sonora and Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and more recently on the west coast of Baja California.

The implementation of this plan, which has just been published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF) provides for the implementation of management measures backed by scientific research developed and issued by the National Fisheries Institute (Inapesca), and have based the statutes established in the General Law of Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Furthermore, using the PMP is to provide knowledge about the resource and various forms of exploitation and to promote the sustainability of the existing population and the marine life that depends on the Giant Squid.

In this plan the integration of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), groups of fishermen, federal agencies and state governments, and academic institutions through meetings and workshops organized by the Regional Centers participated Fisheries Research (CRIP ) of Inapesca in Guaymas, La Paz and Mazatlan.

The Fishery Management Plan includes training programs on proper resource management, environmental education, management of fishing gear and sanitary measures to achieve higher quality in production.

Likewise, protocols BMPs will be developed from the capture of resource, collection centers and retail outlets, according to the Health and Safety Program established by Agrifood Sagarpa.

In order to conduct a review and monitoring of the Plan, the Committee on Fishery Management in accordance with the General Law on Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture was established.

The PMP will be updated every three years, a period considered adequate to perform the proposed actions in the short term.
