Anoxia and high temperature caused death Sea Shells Fan

The Institute of the Sea of ​​Peru, Imarpe revealed that the recent massive fan Conchas death recorded in the Pisco-Paracas Bay originated from lack of oxygen and high water temperatures.

Imarpe said in the Athens area marine concessions Paracas Bay area where Conchas fan placed for fattening mode using bottom culture are located.

Experts also evaluated ten stations sampling randomly distributed along the Athens area, where they found shells fan with densities ranging from 22 to 163 individuals per square meter, demonstrating a high population density and an inhomogeneous distribution a shallow area.

They found that 43% of the samples did not meet the minimum legal size of 6.5 inches.

On the other hand, the assessed presented stations anoxia, a condition that occurs by the little exchange of water and a high load of organic matter, which depletes oxygen as they decompose.
