(Seattle, WA) – La Sardina thread herring fishery Southern Gulf of California (Opisthonema libertate, Opisthonema bulleri and Opisthonema medirastre), Located in territorial waters of Mexico, has voluntarily entered the full assessment of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The evaluation is being conducted by third party certification, SCS Global Services. If the fishery is certified, products may be eligible to carry the blue MSC ecolabel.
The standard for MSC fishery is the most recognized worldwide for the certification of fisheries environmentally sustainable and well-managed wild capture.

The thread herring fishery in the South is located in the Gulf of California in Mexican territorial waters of the states of Sinaloa and Nayarit.
Three government agencies have a say in the management of this fishery, which represents approximately 37% of the total landings of Sardina in Mexico.
The client for this evaluation, Maz Sardina SA de CV, has seven licensed vessels operating in the fishery. Maz Sardina has chosen SCS Global Services to conduct an independent evaluation and has indicated it is willing to share with others the certificate fishermen operating within the area of evaluation.
