Peru increased by 75% share for mackerel fishing in the South Pacific

The Peru increased its share mackerel fishing on the high Seas as a result of the recent meeting of the Committee on Regional Fisheries Management Organisation South Pacific (RFMOs-PS) held in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Peruvian delegation was headed by the Deputy Ministers of Fisheries, Juan Carlos Requejo; and Foreign Affairs, Claudio De la Puente. Also included experts from both ministries, Imarpe and the private sector.

This year, the Peruvian fleet can fish up to 7,400 tons, an increase of more than 3,000 tonnes of quota agreed in 2014, equivalent to a volume 75% higher than last year.

Vice Foreign Minister De la Puente said the achievement is especially relevant if one considers that Peru has not yet voting on the RFMO.

"The eventual parliamentary approval of the Convention RFMO allow the Peru access the full membership, currently cooperating party is not contratante- and entitled to vote, which will promote our interests more efficiently under the agreement"Added the Vice Chancellor.

During the meeting in Auckland Vice Chancellor made clear noted that Peru, in exercise of its sovereign rights, reserves the sustainable use and ordering of fishery resources within 200 miles Maritime Domain and the competence of the Commission applies RFMO Offshore, ie, beyond the jurisdictional maritime areas, unless express consent of the coastal State, which is not the case for Peru.
