PERU – Sharp decline in landings for fishmeal industry in August

In August 124,600 tonnes of fish were landed in Peruvian ports, 21.8% fewer than in the same month in 2013, when landings totaled 159,300 tonnes. This decrease was primarily due to lower catch anchovy.

However, when evaluating the first eight months of 2014, it is observed that total landings fell by 9.7% yoy, from 3.4 million tons in 2013 to 3.1 million tons this year.

According to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by the Ministry of Production (Produce), in the eighth month of 2014, 20,300 tonnes of fish for fishmeal industry, 70.1% fewer than in the same month in 2013 (67,700 tonnes were landed ).

During the period from January to August were used in total 2.2 million tonnes of fishery resources for indirect consumption, compared to 2.6 million tonnes in 2013, ie 13.5% less.

For direct human consumption in August landed 104,200 tonnes of fish compared to 91,600 tonnes in the same month of 2013.

During the first eight months of 2014, a total of 856,500 tonnes of fish for direct consumption, 2.2% more than last year (838,200 tonnes) were used.

For the preparation of frozen products landed 61,100 tonnes in late August, while in the same month of 2013 had been downloaded 42,600 tons.

The accumulated for this industry between January and August this year totaled 479,900 tonnes landing, up 5.2% on the same period in 2013, when 456,100 tonnes were landed.

On the other hand, fishery resources used by the canning industry in August 2014 totaled 6,000 tonnes, compared with 15,200 tonnes in the same month last year.

Whereas the first eight months of 2014, a decrease of 19.3% was recorded in the resources used by the canning industry: 66,700 tonnes compared to 82,600 tonnes in the same period of 2013.

Landings for direct human consumption as fresh reached last August about 34,800 tons, while in the same month last year was 30,400 tons.

Meanwhile, in the first eight months of 2014 290.100 tons of resources were landed for fresh consumption, 9.9% more than in the same period in 2013 (263,900 tonnes).
