New vaccines to protect warmwater fish

Merck Animal Health (MSD) has created vaccines that protect warmwater fish like Tilapia against a highly prevalent disease.

According to the company, these vaccines — AQUAVAC® Strep Sa and NORVAX® Strep No — were developed to assist producers in their fight against the two major strains of streptococcus, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus iniae.

Streptococcus affects both warm-water fish in marine environments and in freshwater and can cause death rates of up to 70 percent.

“These important vaccines reflect the commitment of Merck Animal Health to support producers with vaccination programs and effective control, such as Tilapia Health 'for producers of Tilapia”, dijo Norman Lim, Merck Animal Health.

For vaccines approved by the authorities of Viet Nam, MSD explains that AQUAVAC Strep Sa provides protection against biovar 2 strain of S. agalactiae, a strain found in Vietnam. In a field trial on a large scale

The company says that the fish vaccinated with AQUAVAC Strep Sa are safe for human consumption.

The other vaccine is the Norvax Strep If that induces protective immunity in warm water fish against streptococcus caused by S. iniae. If Norvax Strep can be administered through a bath for 3 gram fish and over and through injection to fish over 20 grams. The vaccine is registered for use on the giant perch.

The vaccine has been proven to provide protection for at least 12 weeks in laboratory studies and 34 weeks in the field trials.
