Norwegian seafood exports to China coldness stable despite political

Seafood exporters of Norway seem to have made a good business in China last year, with strong growth in monetary terms although volumes were reduced in some categories, according to a breakdown of the data provided by the Seafood Council SeafoodSource Norwegian (NSC), a body representing the industry.

Sales of salmon (whole, Front head) totaled 8,876 metric tons (MT), up 14 percent from 7609 tonnes recorded a year earlier. In terms of value, there was a better growth of 12.6 percent compared with the simple increase of 0.4 percent in 2013.

Total shipments in 194,706 MT were up to 163,346 tons in 2013. In value terms, total shipments grew 28 percent to NOK 3.1 billion (USD 409 million, 363 million euros). This represents an achievement for the National Security Council, as the cold ongoing political relations between Beijing and Oslo continues to dog the market access for goods Norway. Most deliveries from Norway to China are on the processing industry giant country – although the National Security Council is working hard to make it acceptable for domestic consumption cod.

The greatest growth was recorded in Mackerel, which grew by 36 percent in terms of volume of 81,923 tons while shipments of cod increased by 9.6 percent in volume to 48,064 MT.

Similarly, although shipments declined Haddock in terms of volume of 21,466 tonnes to 18,834 tonnes, there was an impressive 16 percent growth year on year in terms of value.

While China continues to grow in stature as an export market is a long way from the importance of the first EU classified, which buys 62 percent of exports of Norwegian Sea. Despite the collapse of the export market of Russia due to the sanctions of this year, the Norwegian fishing industry has shown that it can be adapted to meet the needs of new markets.

The result has been export record numbers Salmon, cod and mackerel, said Terje Martinussen, CEO of the NSC. “Norwegian Sea has never enjoyed a stronger position in the world market”He said.

Norwegian Seafood Exporters look set to do well in China this year given the continued growth in popularity of Sushi and Sashimi dining. Similarly, sales of salmon have not been unduly affected by ongoing fighting corruption of government by the increasing sophistication of online retailing as a way for young and middle-class consumers in the country.
