The humpback whale is not endangered in Brazil

The Brazilian government today removed 77 species from the list of endangered animals, in which 1,051 still remain threatened, the Ministry of Environment in a statement.

The list was compiled by the State Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation and shall be formalized in the second half with its complete publication in the Official Gazette. Among the species that were removed from the list highlights the Humpback Whale, visiting the coast of the states of Bahia (northeast) and Holy Spirit (southeast) between June and November.

The whale population that went from 500 animals in 1980 to 15,000 in 2012. This progress is "a result of the integration efforts of civil society, government and business.

Brazilian Environment Minister Izabella Teixeira said the government will intensify, on several fronts, combating crimes against species extinction.
