Important anchovy biomass recovery, with highest percentage of juveniles

A research cruise in the southern region revealed that there was a significant recovery of the stock of anchovy in recent months, the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) reported.

The IMARPE took place between 15 and January 27 Cruise Hydroacoustic Assessment of Pelagic Resources CR. 1501, aboard the scientific research vessel Luis Flores Portugal, in the area between Atico and Ilo, from 0.5 nm to 50 nm away from the coast.

This assessment revealed the existence of a biomass of 607,000 tons, with 98% for juveniles.

“The few adults found correspond to a mature stage no spawning”He said IMARPE.

The juveniles are very close to reaching the minimum size of fish (12 cm) – process known as “recruitment”- Although this could happen in a few months.

“If environmental conditions continue its trend towards normalization and individuals remain in the southern region of the Peruvian Sea, Biomass experience a significant increase, which will mean a successful recruitment”, Scientists say the IMARPE.

This volume represents an important marine resource recovery of the species in the area between Atico (Arequipa) and Ilo (Moquegua) since the previous assessment, conducted in October 2014, the anchovy biomass did not exceed 244,329 tons.

Because the southern stock consists mainly of juveniles, IMARPE the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) kept closed extractive activities in this region until the adult stock availability is adequate.

To monitor and verify the status of the anchovy biomass in March another cruise hydroacoustic assessment of pelagic resources will be made.
