IMARPE launches new scientific research vessel

The Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) will present the newly remodeled BIC Luis Flores Portugal (Ex SNP-2) Shipyard TASA, Chimbote.

After nearly six years of inactivity, the ship will be ready to return to his research along the Peruvian coast for assessment of pelagic and demersal resources and activities of physical, chemical and biological oceanographic survey.

The ship has had several improvements, such as increasing the dimensions, the integral superstructure and hull repairs, extension and refurbishment of laboratory areas, fishing deck, wheelhouse and livability; assembly and installation of scientific echosounders for acoustic survey and mounting and installation of new navigation equipment, communications and security, among others.

Having a fully renovated and repaired ship, will enable better and more efficient research cruises, which obtained information of great importance for studies of fisheries resources; and oceanographic surveys.

On the other hand, the coastal zone is more researched, will reduce the time to research cruises and new fisheries can be assessed.

This ship will join the fleet IMARPE Research, along with the BIC Humboldt and B.I.C. Olaya, to study large-scale wealth of the Peruvian coast.

The christening and launch ceremony will be held tomorrow and will be chaired by the Minister of Production, Piero Ghezzi and President IMARPE the Calm. (R) German Vasquez Solis Talavera.
