South Pacific fishery associations create joint monitoring system

Fishing guilds South Pacific (Ecuador, Chile and Peru) agreed to create a joint system that will monitor information resources and marine ecosystems, according to the National Fisheries Society (SNP).

He said that this new system will look to improve scientific knowledge on the impact of climate change on ocean biodiversity.

For this the SNP, the National Fisheries Society of Chile (Sonapesca) and the Chamber of Fishery Ecuador agreed to establish the basis for a regional alliance that will allow better observation of the Large Marine Ecosystem of the Humboldt Current.

For this data routinely collected fishing vessels in their fishing operations will be used, said the SNP.

In this regard, the President of the Peruvian fishing guild, Elena Conterno said it is increasingly growing international concern about the impact of climate change on the oceans.

This is due to the increase in sea temperature, oxygen depletion, acidification, sea level rise, among other factors affecting marine biodiversity, distribution and abundance of resources and the reproduction of the species.

He said that the information obtained by fishing associations, supplementing the work of research institutes in each country, will help design and implement public policies consistent with the environmental and marine resources.

These agreements were announced at the Pavilion Peru headquarters of COP 20. The presentation was attended by the General Manager Sonapesca, Hector Bacigalupo, and the Chamber of Fisheries of Ecuador, Luis García.
