The Project FitSmoltImplemented by the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture (NOFIMA, for its acronym in English) expects greater survival through exercise and a better classification of farmed salmon. The initiative is financed by the Research Council of Norway and the Research Fund Norwegian Sea (FHF).
According to figures from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA, for its acronym in English), the annual loss is about 16%. An important part of this fish is in poor condition, which are more susceptible to disease. These fish die relatively soon after being transferred to Mar.

Swimming ability
Scientists previously showed that the classification of juvenile salmon, for their ability to swim, delivery postsmolts heart muscle which is 24% more powerful and whose gill surface area is 16% larger. These fish swim 66% more efficiently. Increasing the ability of the heart means that fish grow faster and have a greater resistance to disease.
The next step is to drill Salmon early age until they are moved to the Sea, by swimming exercise at the right rate.
Scientists now want to see if a more robust fish can be developed with these exercises along the entire freshwater phase.
"We also want to compare the ability of the heart of smolts culture with wild smolts, and identify markers that reflect these differences. Wild salmon are taken from Lærdal river, since we know that the smolts from here are strong and swim well. The long term goal is to ensure that future generations of fish culture are at least as robust as their wild cousins ", Dice Tackle.
