Seafood exports keep growing, despite falling in July

Peruvian fish exports generated USD in July 268.8 million in revenue, up 18.7% on the same month in 2013, when its value was $ 330.5 million, the Ministry of Production (Produce) .

Meanwhile, export volume fell 20.2% to 142,800 tonnes compared to 178,800 tonnes shipped a year earlier. This decrease was mainly due to lower sales of frozen products and Fishmeal and Fish Oil.

According to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by Produce, between January and July 2014 the sale abroad of 1,063,400 tonnes of fish products generated USD 1920.7 million, while in the same period last year 716,800 tons were exported USD 1.412 million. These figures show increases of 48% in volume terms and 36% in value.

In July alone 98,700 tonnes of fishmeal were exported USD 165 million, while in the same month last year were sent abroad 118,500 tonnes worth USD 193.8 million, figures that indicate losses of 16.8% and 14.9%, respectively.

However, between January and July 2014 641.300 tonnes of fishmeal, 76.6% more than in the same period in 2013 (363,000 tonnes) were exported.

The main markets for Peruvian fishmeal were China, Germany, Japan, Vietnam and Chile who bought over 575 600 tonnes of total sales as of July 2014.

July exports led foreign sales of fishmeal in the first seven months to US $ 941.9 million, up 46.9% on the same period in 2013 (USD 641.1 million).

Meanwhile, crude oil exports totaled 6,500 tonnes last July, ie 52.3% less than the same month of 2013 (15,200 tonnes).

Whereas the first seven months of 2014, were sold abroad a total of 91,300 tons of oil, a 108.9% increase over the same period last year (43,700 tons).

Belgium, Denmark, Chile and China bought about 72,970 tons of fish oil to last July.

These sales generated USD 187.4 million, an amount that represents a rise of 65.8% over the same period in 2013 ($ 113 million).

Also exported about 29,700 tonnes in July of frozen products, a figure that accounts for a decrease of 16.9% compared to 35,700 tonnes exported a year earlier.

In the first seven months of this year were sold abroad 254,700 tonnes of frozen products, an amount that represents a rise of 2.7% over the same period in 2013 (243,300 tonnes).
