The project proposes the use Aquafly flour insects as food ingredients for salmon, also from an environmental, social and economic terms. As project leader, National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research in Norway (NIFES, for its acronym in English) will be responsible for the investigation.

The project is a cooperative effort twelve research institutions and industry partners. Aquafly explore the potential of "adapting" the nutritional profile of insects to meet the nutritional needs of farmed salmon.

"An important objective of this project is to optimize the composition of fatty acids, so the fat derived from insects can contribute to the need for Salmon Omega-3 Marine"Said the director of research, Bente Torstensen.

Previous studies Institute have shown that based on insect food is a good source of protein for salmon farming. Insects and their larvae are an important component of the natural diet of salmon and, therefore, food based on insect is one of the most natural things you can add to the nutrition of fish.

"We want to document the content of undesirable substances in the entire production chain, from food insect insects themselves and finally Salmon fillets"Said Torstensen, adding that"All feed ingredients may contain undesirable substances, and therefore the identification of these is an important aspect of the assessment of food security".
