Between days 27, 28 and January 29 will be held at the Oceanographic Center Canarias Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) the 16th Annual Meeting of the Global Partnership for Observation of the Oceans (POGO), which brings together the Directors major oceanographic research institutions in the world, currently bringing together 38 organizations from 19 countries on five continents.
The main objective of the meeting is to analyze the status of programs and actions raised by POGO throughout 2014, including those dedicated to the global ocean observing and training of students from developing countries.
Additionally there will be two parallel working groups with relevant guest researchers, where topics such as observation of the deep ocean, visibility and access to oceanographic data series, Marine Protected Areas and industry relations were addressed.
At the opening session on Tuesday 27 will expose the highlights of Spanish science in oceanography by representatives of the main institutions of the country (IEO, Ports, CSIC, SOCIB, Plocan and powers of Marine Sciences at the universities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Cadiz and Vigo).
This session will be coordinated by the director of the IEO and member of the Executive Committee of POGO, Eduardo Balguerías.
At the meeting, Karen Wiltshire, Deputy Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and Head of the Biological Station Helgoland and the Wadden Sea Station (Germany), will assume the role of President of POGO 2015 and 2016.
Since its inception in 1999, this association seeks to expand and improve collaboration in international programs and sharing of large infrastructure indispensable for addressing a global system of ocean observing that allow addressing the major challenges of global concern such as pollution and impact of climate change.
