EE.UU. – DiCaprio Foundation donates $ 2 million to promote ocean conservation

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation spent $ 2 million to Oceans 5, a collaboration of international funders dedicated to stop overfishing and the establishment of marine reserves in the five oceans of the world.

The funds will support projects to create large protected areas in the Pacific Islands and the Arctic, and improve enforcement of Fisheries in Europe, the US and Central America. DiCaprio's contribution will also support the protection of threatened shark populations, creating a large marine monument in remote Pacific waters of the United States, and the intensification of efforts to protect Antarctica.

“Oceans 5 is a new innovative platform for marine conservation. Working with other philanthropists, we are getting smarter and impactful investment for the future of our planet”, dijo Leonardo DiCaprio. “The sad truth is that less than 2% of our oceans are fully protected. We have to change that now. My foundation supports projects Oceans 5 are directly improving the health of the ocean to stop overfishing and creating marine reserves.”

Oceans 5 is a new model for collaborative philanthropy.

The financial support from the foundation of DiCaprio assist in the development of future initiatives and support directly to the beneficiaries, which include:

A new coalition of four conservation groups working to strengthen controls over illegal fishing in the European Union, the market for products from the world's largest ocean;
A local organization in the Republic of Kiribati, which works on the implementation of the fourth largest marine reserve in the world, located in the central Pacific;
A coalition of three organizations working to improve the enforcement of fishing in Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador, including the construction of a radar installation in Cocos Island;
A group of Islanders Cook Islanders working to create a marine park in an area that is three times the size of California;
Several organizations that advocate for the creation of marine reserves in Arctic Canada, Greenland and Russia.

The grant will also help DiCaprio a coalition of six organizations that worked successfully to secure new restrictions on world trade in endangered sharks.

Oceans 5 is a project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, a charitable organization based in New York. Its members and partners are the Oak Foundation, the Planet Heritage Foundation, Marisla Foundation, the Waitt Foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, The Moore Charitable Foundation The Angell Family Foundation and Bill and Shannon Joy.
