CHILE – Reactivated bill that subsidizes the cultivation of algae

The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) this week joined the modifications that have allowed the bill to revive cultivation and restocking Algae initiative was no movement from the entrance, in August 2013.

The amendments were admitted to the Chamber of Deputies and Subpesca presented by the Committee on Fisheries, Aquaculture and Maritime Interests in the House on October 15.

The bill provides for a budget of Rs 1,000 million (USD 1.6 million) annually for the first three years. It expands the number of potential beneficiaries by incorporating artisanal fishers working with management plans.

The original project only considered those developing small-scale aquaculture or worked in management areas.

Subpesca also emphasized that facilitates access to the benefit.

According to the Undersecretary of Fisheries, Raul Sunico, the Government decided to amend the draft on the grounds that it is necessary to generate productive alternatives, mainly for the crafts sector, given the high demand of algae worldwide.

“We see an opportunity to boost the small-scale aquaculture in our country”Said Holder Subpesca.

In 2013, Chile exported algae for about USD 300 million, and this year is expected to increase the final value.

According to statistics from the Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (FIFG), between January and May 2014 the country exported manufactured from seaweed products worth USD 143 million.

The Bulletin of Fisheries and Aquaculture Exports developed by the Institute, indicates that the figure is 25.8% higher than that obtained in the same period last year.
